以前読んだ本の応用編。

以下、知らなかったことをメモ。

（１）p88
イギリス英語では、historical は「ヒストリカル」だけでなく、「イストリカル」と発音する。だから、an historical novel（歴史小説）のように an になる！ ちなみに、hisotory は「ヒストリー」であり「イストリー」と読むようなことはない（a history book）。

（２）p190
「～がある」「～がいる」を表す there is… / there are… 構文。～がリストの場合（複数の物を列挙する場合）、リストの第１番目単語に be 動詞の数（is か are か）が一致する。すなわち、

・There is a bottle of milk, some eggs, and butter.（ミルク１本、卵、バターがあります。）
リストの１つ目が a bottle of milk と単数なので is 。

・There are some eggs, a bottle of milk, and butter.（卵、ミルク１本、バターがあります。）
リストの１つ目が some eggs と複数なので are 。
