[英語] trip・journey・travel 等の＜旅＞系英単語まとめ

trip、journey、travel の違いを高校生時代に塾で習った気がするが思い出せない。これを機に、旅に関する英単語をまとめ直してみよう。

運よく Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary の trip の項目に＜旅＞系英単語のまとめが書かれていた。

“A trip usually involves you going to a place and back again; a journey is usually one-way. A trip is often shorter than a journey , although it does not have to be. It is often short in time, even if it is long in distance. Journey is more often used when the travelling takes a long time and is difficult. In North American English journey is not used for short trips (British English)”
（trip は行って帰ってくる短期間の軽い行為であり、journey は行くのみの困難な行為。）

“tour: a journey made for pleasure during which several different places are visited”
（tour は楽しみのための複数の場所を訪れる旅行。）

“expedition: an organized journey with a particular purpose, especially to find out about a place that is not well known”
（expedition は知らない場所を訪れる、特定の目的で行く組織だった旅行。）

“excursion: a short trip made for pleasure, especially one that has been organized for a group of people”
（excursion はグループで行く、楽しみのための短い旅行。）

“outing: a short trip made for pleasure or education, usually with a group of people and lasting no more than a day”
（outing は日帰りで行く、楽しみや教育目的の、集団での小旅行）

“day out: a trip to somewhere for a day, especially for pleasure”
（day out は楽しみのために行く、１日がかりの旅行）

travel が載っていないので、Collins COBUILD Advanced Learner’s Dictionary を調べてみた。

名詞の travel を引くと “Travel is the activity of travelling."（travel とは travelling をする行為である。）と書かれている。動詞の travel を引こう。

“If you travel, you go from one place to another, often to a place that is far away.”
（travel する行為は長距離の、ある地点から別地点への移動のことである。）

まとめると、面白いことが分かってきた。

trip は行って帰ってくる短 “時間” の移動。travel は長 “距離” 移動。journey は困難を伴う、一方通行の移動。

tour は観光目的、expedition は課外活動的なこと、outing は遠足（楽しみあるいは見学目的）、day out は１日掛かりのお出かけ、といった感じだろうか。
